Quick overview — what you'll do
Setting up a Ledger hardware wallet means initializing your device, installing the companion app (Ledger Live), applying any firmware updates, creating a secure PIN, backing up your recovery phrase, and performing a small test transaction. Each step is intentional and designed to keep your private keys offline and under your control.
1) Unbox, inspect, connect
Check that packaging seals are intact. Use the included USB cable to connect your Ledger to a trusted desktop or laptop — avoid public kiosks. The device should show a welcome message; if anything looks tampered with, do not proceed and contact official support.
2) Download Ledger Live and launch the official flow
Download Ledger Live only from the official Ledger website. Install and open it, then choose "Initialize as new device" or "Restore from recovery phrase" depending on your situation. The app guides you through firmware checks and pairing securely with the hardware device.
3) Apply firmware updates when prompted
Firmware updates are important for security and often add support for new assets. Approve updates only after confirming the prompt on the device screen. Do not disconnect mid-update — interrupting the process can require recovery steps.
4) Create a PIN and write down your recovery phrase
Choose a PIN that balances memorability and unpredictability. Your Ledger will then display a recovery phrase (usually 24 words). Write these exact words, in order, on the provided recovery card or on paper. Keep the phrase offline; never photograph, email, or store it in cloud services.
5) Optional: Passphrase and account setup
Advanced users may enable a passphrase to create hidden wallets. This is powerful but increases responsibility — losing the passphrase means losing those funds. After initial setup, add accounts in Ledger Live for the coins you use, install required coin apps on the device, and sync balances.
6) Test with a small transfer
Before moving large amounts, send a tiny test transaction to a newly generated address. Verify the receiving address on the hardware device display (not only on the screen) before confirming in Ledger Live.
Troubleshooting & quick fixes
- Device not recognized: Try a different USB cable/port and restart Ledger Live. Ensure OS permissions allow the app to access USB devices.
- Firmware stuck: Follow device bootloader instructions shown on-screen. Reboot your computer and retry the official flow if needed.
- Lost or damaged recovery sheet: If you still have access to your wallet, create a new recovery and move funds; never guess missing words.
Everyday safety habits
Verify addresses on-device for every spend, keep firmware and Ledger Live up to date, split funds between hot/spend wallets and cold storage, and store your recovery phrase in a secure, fireproof location (metal backups are an excellent option).
